Don't Always Believe What You Read Online

The internet abounds with misinformation, rumour and opinion and the subject of window blinds is no different. Forums come alive with debate over how much skill you need to install a blind and arguments flare up around the best blinds for your home. We see this and we sit in the shadows, waiting for the right moment to intervene.

After reading a forum discussion on a popular motherhood website asking: “Stylish roller blind – is there such a thing????? (sic)” and seeing the ensuing responses that included withering one-liners like ‘stylish roller blind is an oxymoron,’ we decided to act.

There are a lot of myths out there that prevent people from finding suitable blinds that are ideal for their homes. It’s not nice to see people base their opinions on the thoughts of other people, so we’re wading in with this list to debunk those myths. Prepare yourself if you’ve lived in the dark for too long because our blinds are about to throw some shade (sorry!) on those misguided assumptions.

MYTH: “Installing blinds is too difficult”.

A person installing a generic roller blind in a windowOk, let’s set a few things straight here. Installing blinds, such as a long roller blind or a wooden venetian blind may take a bit more planning and concentration. You can’t throw a blind at a window and hope for it to stick, but we have simplified the installation process to require a minimal amount of tools and only a handful of drilled holes and screws. If you’re not exactly DIY-inclined then yes, it may take you a little longer than someone who knows their way around a power drill, but it will only require a smidge more effort. Take your time and follow the instructions and you’ll find it’s really not that daunting.

Hundreds of people install thousands of blinds each day, so have a little confidence and give it a whirl!

MYTH: “Blinds are hard to keep clean”

A handheld vacuum cleaner to remove dust from a venetian blindThis is a misconception and only as hard as you make it. Most people’s experiences with dirty blinds arise when they notice said dirty blind. By this point, you’re most of the way down the road to Deep Clean Central which would require additional effort to clean.

Blinds are a part of your home and essentially a piece of furniture. If you never vacuumed your carpet until it was caked in dirt and grime and filth then you’d probably blame yourself for not acting quicker. When you think of it, your blind is the same. So, give it a quick wipe down as part of your weekly cleaning routine and you’ll find your blind stays looking gorgeous for years to come.

Failing that, sit tight while we develop a self-cleaning blind.

MYTH: “Vertical blinds live in offices and not people’s houses”

Palermo Champagne Vertical BlindThis was the first sentence of another discussion on the popular motherhood forum, which we think is quite unreasonable. Firstly, you can choose whatever blind you like for your home – the Queen should explicitly decree it in her next Christmas message. The opinions and snobbery online aren’t reflective of everyone else and you’ll find people will love the vertical blind you choose for your home.

The second point is this: vertical blinds have come on leaps and bounds in recent decades. Perhaps some people haven’t seen a vertical blind for a good few years, and we invite them to come and browse the enormously stylish vertical blind collection we have to offer. Sure, offices have vertical blinds the same way they have chairs. Not all chairs are the same, and this is the case with vertical blinds. Browse, search, shop and enjoy – there is a world of stylish and vertical blinds out there.

Vertical blinds are also ideal for some specific windows, such as patio doors where you need to accentuate the height of the window, have access to the door and still maintain some level of natural light entering the room. Mix this with a refreshing colour and it will become the star of the show in your room.

MYTH: “Blinds are expensive”

A woman counting moneyWindow blinds from DotcomBlinds are made to measure and therefore the price changes depending on the size. The price, however, starts very affordably and only increases incrementally. We have done everything we can to keep the price as affordable as possible whilst never neglecting the quality. We don’t use cardboard barrels and you will never need to cut the blind down to size. The blind is made to suit your window perfectly.

Costs are kept down because we’re based in the UK, and we check our prices every month against highstreet retailers to ensure we are cheaper than highstreet prices. In terms of quality and price, you’ll struggle to do better than DotcomBlinds.

MYTH: “Blinds are a compromise”

We imagine this statement means it is a compromise to have blinds instead of curtains, which sounds odd because you can surely install a curtain anywhere a blind would go. What it comes down to is the look. We don’t sell curtains and so it would be unfair to pass too much judgement, but simply put – it comes down to your opinion and what you prefer.

Agreed, some curtains may provide more blackout benefits than some blinds, and vice versa depending on how and where they are installed. Some windows will benefit more from having a curtain, whereas areas such as the kitchen or bathroom would cause a curtain to become dirty and smelly from the excess moisture and grime.

As you can see with many of these myths, they are formed on people’s opinions and not fact. To see the facts for yourself, browse DotcomBlinds today and see our collection of blinds. And remember, folks, it’s your home, your style so it’s your choice what blind you want!
