Curtain Tracks vs Curtain Poles

So you’ve bought yourself a set of DotcomBlinds Curtains, good for you, they look amazing don’t they?

Now that you have your curtains, you’ll need to hang them up on your window so they can do their job and keep you shaded.

But before you hang your curtains, you’ll need to know whether you need a curtain track or a curtain pole to hang them up on, so which do you need?

Should My Curtains Hang From A Pole or Tracks?

If you have Eyelet Curtains you’ll more than likely want to hang them on a curtain pole as the pole will easily thread through the eyelets on your curtains and using eyelet curtains with a curtain pole gives them the best look and ease of use.

However if you get a Pencil Pleat Curtain or a Double Pleat Curtain, things can get a bit murky as they’re best suited to be hung on a curtain track as they have hooks, which loop into the rollers on curtain tracks. But you can also connect these types of curtains to a curtain pole by attaching the hooks to loops which connect to the curtain pole, but your curtains won’t look their best when hung this way.

So as a general rule for Eyelet Curtains you’ll want a curtain pole and for Pencil Pleat Curtains and Double Pleat Curtains  you’ll want to opt for a curtain track instead.

What Is The Best Option Between A Curtain Pole & Curtain Track?

If you already have your curtains, it’s best to make a choice based on what works with your curtain, but if you haven’t purchased your curtains yet, you’ll need to consider how you want to hang your curtains.

Obviously, you can make this a stylistic choice, some people naturally prefer curtain poles, whereas some people prefer curtain tracks. But aside from style, each hanging method has its own pros and cons which you should know before making a choice.

Curtain tracks are great when you’re short on space, as they can be easily attached either to the ceiling or a wall and have a low profile design. This makes them excellent to use in tight spaces like bay windows or on floor to ceiling windows and easy to fide if you’re worried about it interfering with your décor.

Curtain tracks also have an advantage in the fact they can be operated by a ‘draw cord’ this means that you can  open and close your curtains by pulling a cord, much like a set of blinds.

However the drawbacks of curtain tracks is that there are less style options for curtain tracks than there are curtain poles, so while they can be useful, curtain tracks are limited in how they can be used in your home’s décor.

Curtain poles on the other hand, have plenty of style options available, as they can be made in many different finishes with different flairs to them; from basic plastic poles to stylish wooden poles and golden poles with ornate flourishes and designs. So if you want a style choice, curtain poles are the better choice for you.

Curtain poles are also incredibly easy to hang your blinds on, as you just need to thread the pole through your curtain’s eyelets to connect them, whereas curtain tracks need you to connect each hook to the gliders on the track.

The main downsides of curtain poles are that they take up more space than curtain tracks, meaning they can be hard to use in tight spaces; unlike curtain tracks you won’t be able to have a drawcord operation, meaning they need to be operated by hand; and as a general rule curtain poles tend to be more costly than curtain tracks.

Now you know the various benefits and drawbacks of curtain tracks and curtain poles, you can now make an informed decision as to which you’d like in your home. While it’s still best to choose your curtain hanging method based on your curtains you know all the options available to you.

If you’re looking to hang your curtains in a tight spot or use a drawcord, the curtain tracks are for you; but if you’re more interested in stylistic options a curtain pole will suit you much better.
