Let’s face it, fire retardancy is one of those things you’ll probably never know you need until you need it. Not to get too doom-and-gloom about it, but fire retardant blinds can be the difference between a near-miss and a smoky pile of ash. Hey, we never said this topic was going to be a barrel of laughs but with 37,000 house fires in the UK last year, it is important, so pay attention!
Fire retardancy in a fabric ensures that the fire will not continue burning once the ignition source has been removed. This means that should your fire-retardant blind come into contact with a flame, once the initial area has burned away, the fire will not spread across the blind.
For example, sunlight reflecting off a shaving mirror or vanity mirror, you know the type with the extreme magnification, with the beam of light pointing straight at your blind. With a fire retardant blind you’ll find a very annoying hole burned through the fabric but no disaster. Without fire retardancy, the entire blind will be aflame and spreading to other parts of the room. It can happen to the best of us – even Dames!
Choosing the fire retardancy option ensures you can rest happy in the knowledge that should the worst happen, your window blind will not fan the flames, so to speak, and exacerbate the situation. It does go without saying though, that candles should not be left unattended near any fabrics and our blinds are no exception. The main purpose of a fire retardant blind is to inhibit the spread of fire but it will still burn when in contact with an ignition source, so always exercise caution.
Our fire retardant blinds meet the following safety standards: Fire Retardancy: BS 5867 Part 2 type B 2008. This means they are tested thoroughly and are certified for use in not only homes and domestic spaces, but they can also be used in commercial settings too.
The great thing about fire retardancy is that it is completely unnoticeable. It doesn't change the thickness, feel, smell, look or finish of the fabric – you wouldn’t know it was there! But like all true superheroes waiting in the wings, the fire retardancy is ever-present and ready to help when you need it most.
By adding ‘Fire Retardant’ to your blind at the checkout, you’ll also be adding peace of mind and ensuring your home and loved ones have a little more protection.
