How to Measure
Now, you can’t mess this one up. It’s what we call ‘easy’ here at DotcomBlinds. But just in case you need some help, follow this quick guide.
First thing's first, identify whether your blind is going inside or outside of a recess.
Inside the recess
A recess fit blind means you supply us with the width and drop of your recess – from top to bottom and wall to wall. We make deductions to account for the brackets to ensure your blind fits within the recess perfectly.
To measure a roller blind to fit inside the recess of your standard window, simply measure the full width and the height of the recess. Then input those measurements into the product page with your order selecting the ‘recess’ option. We’ll do the rest, leaving you the well-deserved excuse to put your feet up, you worked hard for it after all!
Don’t be tempted to deduct any measurements, we do this for you. For recess fit cord and wand-operated metal venetian blinds, we will make a 4mm deduction to the given width measurement. For recess fit chain operated metal venetian blinds, we will make a 6mm deduction to the width measurement. This is to ensure the blind fits comfortably within the recess, and you do not need to account for these measurements. Make sure you use a metal tape measure; a cloth one can stretch and give you more millimetres per centimetre than a pound-shop ruler. Also, take your measurements in three places and give us the smallest (if there is a smallest). You will find that some recesses shift and settle over time.
Outside the recess
A blind going outside of a recess is usually called an exact fit blind. An exact fit blind means we won’t make any deductions to the width or drop measurements. Exact fit is the bracket to bracket measurement and is commonly found installed outside of a recess. The size you give us is the size your blind is made to.
If you want your blind to hang outside the recess, measure the height and width but be sure to add some overlap to reduce light leakage. This overlap should be about 70mm at the top and bottom and 50mm each side, ensuring you suffer no dazzling strips of sunlight once your blind is happily installed. Please select the ‘exact’ size option when ordering.
How to Install a Venetian Blind
Step 1
Put your venetian blind into the window area and tilt the head rail towards you so that you can see the position of the ladder cord mechanisms within the rail. This is because you need to position your brackets at least 5cm away from the mechanisms. Use a pencil to mark the place where the brackets will go.
Step 2
Be sure you position your blind away from handles or vents on the window if it is going to be top fixed. The last thing you want is for your new shiny blinds to hit against your window handle everytime you use it!
Step 3
You can either fix your blind to the window frame or on the wall in front of the recess or on the ceiling or top of the recess. Depending on where you’re going to put it affects the position of the brackets. A face fixed bracket sees the blinds mounted to the surface of the window frame or wall using two screws in each bracket. A top fixed bracket involves the brackets being fitted directly above the blind, to the ceiling or top of the recess.
Step 4
To fit, ensure your brackets are in the correct place (see above) and are level. Use a spirit level to make sure the brackets are straight and use a pencil to mark where the holes are. This is where you need to drill. Once the hole has been drilled, insert the wallplug and then screw into the wall plug.
Step 5
Now the blind’s brackets are in place, all that’s left is to put up the blind. Open the swing arm on the bracket so that it protrudes. Put the front lip of the rail onto the front prongs of the bracket. Then, gently push the swing arm towards the back of the brackets to lock the rail into place.
Step 6
The only thing left to do at this point is to install your cord safety cleat. A cleat allows you to keep any loose ends out of reach of children - a key safety element and not something you should overlook. Your cord cleat should be installed close to the headrail, but no less than 1.5m above the floor. It must be out of reach of children. The cord should be tied around it in full when the blind is not in use and never knotted, tied together or tied to create a loop. If you need help at any point during the installation of the blind, get in touch with one of our trained members of staff who will happily talk you through the process.
If you choose the chain operated blind, the chain tidy will be attached to the chain when the blind arrives. The chain tidy should be at a maximum distance from the control mechanism, keeping the chain taut (not under excessive tension however as this could negatively affect the longevity and operation of the blind). Put the retaining device on the wall, mark fixing holes with a pencil, drill the holes and screw the device to the wall with suitable fixings.
Technical Specifications
Our metal venetian blinds are made from aluminium and consist of a colour-matched headrail that houses the mechanism, 25mm slats and a metal bottom bar. Colour matched cords run from top to bottom on each side, forming a ladder that the slats sit on, and these are used to control the blind. The slats are raised and lowered and rotated in place to allow absolute control over the light entering your room.
The Headrail
The colour-coated headrail is what the brackets attach to and is the part that houses the mechanism. It is colour matched to the slats but there is a chance of some slight difference in tone. This is because we match a single headrail (and bottom bar) to multiple slat colours.
The mechanism is located inside the headrail and the headrail is crimped slightly around the mechanism to ensure it doesn’t move in transit and in operation. The turn-fix key brackets directly hold the headrail. The headrail dimensions are 24mm high x 27mm deep.
The Mechanism
We offer two types of mechanism for our metal venetian blinds.
The wand and cord operation means we supply a plastic wand that is twisted to rotate the slats, and we supply a cord that is pulled to raise and lower the slats. The cord can be locked into place anywhere down the window too, holding the slats in any spot, wherever you need them.
The other option available is the chain operated venetian blind. This allows you to control the rotation of the slats and raise and lower them all from a single white plastic chain.
The Slats
Our slats are 25mm wide and they're made from aluminium. They will slightly overlap when rotated to the fully closed (flush) position. They come in a large choice of colours and so we recommend ordering a sample of the slat you like the look of so you can see it in person.
On the finished blind it may be common for a slat to be sitting on the bottom bar when the blind is fully extended, and this is not an issue. This is due to the process involved in working out the number of slats required for your blind based on the drop, and sometimes this will be rounded up to ensure there are always enough slats to prevent any gaps in the slats. As a result, a slat may sometimes be left to lay across the bottom bar on a venetian blind.
For recess fit cord and wand operated metal venetian blinds, we will make a 4mm deduction to the given width measurement. For recess fit chain operated metal venetian blinds, we will make a 6mm deduction to the width measurement. This is to ensure the blind fits comfortably within the recess, and you do not need to account for these measurements.

We provide two control options with our venetian blinds, meaning you can choose the right means of operating your blind to suit your needs, location of the window and the room you choose to install it in.
Cord / Wand
A cord or wand operated venetian blind works by lowering and raising the blind with the cord and adjusting the slats with the wand. This more traditional method is a popular means of operating a venetian blind, providing a great level of control over how much light can enter a room.
Chain
A chain operated venetian blind is an enormous innovation in the world of blinds. A single chain operates the raising and lowering of the blind whilst also controlling the tilt of the slats. The single chain is fitted at one end giving a neater appearance overall with a blind free from cords and a wand. This innovative mechanism ensures the blind constantly stays level when lifted and slats can be angled more accurately.
Child Safety
Ensuring our products are child safe is a priority for all of us at DotcomBlinds. As a result, our blinds are child safe by design, with built-in safety mechanisms to help reduce the risk of an accident. These mechanisms specific to venetian blinds are:
•
All cords provided with our products are made at a maximum length of one metre
• A cleat is provided with every looped cord operated blind. The cord needs to be wrapped tightly around the cleat in a figure-of-eight after every use
• Chain tensioners (or p-clips as they're also known) and cord tidies are supplied with every chain operated venetian
If you have any questions about child safety and our blinds, please do not hesitate to get in touch, we're always happy to help.

✖ General wear and tear and fading (these blinds are exposed to very intense UV rays)

However, if your blind stops functioning for any reasons other than those listed above, get in touch. Our warranty covers:
✔ Manufacturing defects
✔ Fabric/slat colour fading within a year
✔ Mechanical malfunction

So, in summary, avoid grossly mistreating your blind, show it a little TLC every so often and don’t use it in ways it wasn’t intended. If you do all those things and something goes wrong with the blind, you’re golden – we’ve got you covered and we’ll and repair or replace it free of charge.
Moisture resistant blinds are ideal for bathrooms and kitchens where there may be a lot of moisture present. Our Moisture Resistant material is rot-proof and Biosafe®. This is because it will not absorb and retain any water under normal circumstances, which is key to preventing the build-up of bacteria or mold in these warm, damp spaces.
We offer a range of moisture resistant blinds – including bathroom blinds, kitchen blinds, and roller blinds. With our measuring guides and unparalleled customer service, you can ensure your blinds are perfect for the room they are used in.
These blinds are super easy to clean and perfect for busy households; simply wipe over with a dry cloth to remove dust and any debris or use a damp cloth to remove stains. Ideal for homes with kids or areas close to food preparation (including use around the kitchen sink). Please consider the type of fabric best suited to the situation, for example, PVC fabric blind may be a better choice is you plan to clean your blind more vigorously. If you’re unsure of the type of fabric you will need, please feel free to order as many free samples as you need.
Fire retardancy is a worthy feature to look out for with a window blind. A fire-retardant blind provides peace of mind, knowing that you have a product in place that will protect your loved ones. It is a high quality and safe alternative in case somebody leaves a candle on the windowsill, or you install a blind close to your hob in the kitchen. This material will only smolder if presented with a flame, and once the source of heat has been removed, it is designed to self-extinguish.
This can be added to your fabric by selecting this add-on at the checkout.
If you are unsure about whether the type of blind you are interested in is fire retardant, please speak to our customer service team.
