Never Shade Your Windows With Anything But Our Blinds.
*Blog updated 04/01/2024 to reflect changes to product range*
We spoke a short while back about quality and the benefits of buying a made to measure blind over cheaper, readymade options. Take a look at this
post about everything you need to know about made to measure blinds to get an idea of what this blog post is about.
I stressed my point that, yes, you may pay a little more for your
made to measure Roller Blinds from us, but it will outlive any readymade option by a country mile. The quality speaks for itself.
So, indulge me if you will, and let me clarify my rather bold claim. Why should you buy a blind from DotcomBlinds?
Because it will be the best blind you ever use.
The Mechanisms
The secret is in the mechanism. It’s like driving a new, expensive car – it just feels smooth and capable.
Our mechanisms are what raise and lower the blind, and much care and time is spent making sure they are as ergonomic and well-suited to the environments they’ll be put in as is spent on anything else.
Take our
roller blind mechanism for example. It is a sidewinder mechanism that far exceeds any other mechanism on the market. Bold claim, right? This mechanism has something that is known as Slipstream® Technology, which reduces friction and aids a smoother action. What’s more – and no, I’m not making this up – the mechanism is air-cooled.
These features combine to provide a smooth-operating, robust chain control blind. When it is not in use the mechanism holds the blind firmly in place, which is more than you can say for the clunkier alternatives out there…
And that is our standard roller blind mechanism. When you take a look at the optional extras, that’s when you get a flavour of how well developed our blinds really are.
A child safe favourite is the
crank mechanism, which allows you to open and close the blind by connecting a crank and turning it. The crank handle can be hooked on and off, which removes the temptation of little hands to play around with it. But this crank handle is a lightweight and easy way to keep a blind safe whilst allowing you to operate it at your leisure.
The mechanism that truly exceeds all expectations is the
remote-controlled blind. From the comfort of your arm chair you can hit a button and the blinds will open or close. If you have multiple blinds you can operate them together or separately from the same remote, which is a handy part of home automation.

The Materials
When you have such high-quality mechanisms, you need top quality materials to build the rest of the blind. The materials we use to make our roller blinds really stand out when you take a closer look at them. We use aluminium barrels which the fabric is locked into, which is very secure. The aluminium barrels are strong enough to hold the weight of the blind fabric, even over a longer distance. Now, why is this important?
My previous
rant against cardboard barrels is based in truth. Cardboard barrels are not strong enough to support the weight of fabric for a long time, and often you’ll find the barrel begins to lose shape, becoming oval and start to sag in the middle. We adapt the thickness of our barrels to account of the size of the blind, it we do this when we process your order so you need not worry about specifying this.
You must also think of the conditions a blind goes through – and believe me, it’s not an easy life. For 24 hours a day blinds face a multitude of temperatures and moisture levels. In the summer it can spend hours baking in direct sunlight, temperatures increased by the window pane, whilst in the winter, condensation and humidity seeps into the fabric, and in turn, into those poor quality cardboard barrels. If the window is open, billowing wind can cause the fabric to flap or move rapidly, which again puts a strain on the barrel and brackets.
Poor quality materials will cause the blind to let you down when you need it most, and only the strongest survive the years.

The Fabrics
Our fabrics are a diverse collection, ranging from dimout fabrics to blackout. The properties of the fabrics lend themselves to nearly every kind of requirement. The fabric is one of the key parts of a blind – there’s no doubt about it. It’s the bit that most people will notice, so it has to be great.
We have plenty of colours and patterns to choose from, but it is not just this that makes our fabric range stand out.
We offer a set of key
features across our fabrics that not only enhance the fabric of your blind but help to extend its lifetime. For example, we have moisture resistant fabrics that are ideally suited to damp locations, say in a bathroom or above a kitchen sink. We have fire retardant blinds and solar reflective blinds that keep a room cool in direct sunlight. We even offer anti-bacterial blinds that help to stop the spread of bacteria.
You won’t find that in your off-the-shelf alternative.
The Manufacturing Process
Our blinds are made in our factory in Wickford in Essex by a passionate team who know what they’re doing. We test every blind before we send it out to make sure it is absolutely perfect. Being based in the UK allows this freedom. If something isn’t right, we can fix it without delaying your order.
We make the blind to match the measurements you supply, so you know the blind will fit your window perfectly. It sounds obvious, doesn’t it? Why on Earth would you want a blind that doesn’t fit properly?
Unfortunately, with the readymade variety, it is often the case that the blind needs to be cut to size or is simply one size-fits-all. No one wants to be taking a saw and scissors to their brand-new blind, and if you have anything but the steadiest of hands, you run the risk of ruining your blind before it even has a chance to hang.
Having a blind that is made to measure removes all of the stresses of cutting and measuring and worrying that a readymade blind brings. You provide one set of measurements, and we take care of the rest. The best blind you’ll ever use makes installation easy!

The service we provide lends itself to the overall quality of the blind because it feels good to be valued: we value your business but we also value your choice.
