Interior Design Tips for your Home Office

The past year and a half has highlighted with absolute clarity the need to have a space in your home that is quiet and conducive to a working environment.

Perched in the kitchen, balanced on a stool, hunched over a laptop and surrounded by distraction soon turns the task of working from home into misery, and you’ll find your output, creativity and focus decline rapidly.

Turning your spare room into a home office gives you a space for you to ‘go to work’ in, but also helps you distinguish between home life and work life. By having a separate room or area of your home dedicated to work, you are able to ‘leave the office’ as such at the end of each day without the temptation to work on your days off.

Here are a few ideas to help you create your own perfect home office.

Desk

Your desk is an integral part of your home office and so it is a great place to start. Pick a desk that is practical for the space in which you’re working. If you only have a corner of a room, choose a small desk. If you have a small room, consider a folding desk that can lay flush against the wall when not in use. Likewise, if the room you choose to work in is large, then choose a larger sized desk to make sure it doesn’t look lost in the room.

Pick a desk that gives you enough room for your PC set up and ensure it is high enough to ensure you can sit correctly and comfortably.

Window Treatment

Selecting the correct window treatment for your home office is important. Not only is it a key stylistic element for your room it is essential to ensure an ergonomic environment.

It is neither comfortable nor healthy working in a room with no means of controlling the levels of light or heat coming in from outside. Glare on your computer screen can make it had to work effectively without straining your eyes. Likewise, it can get too hot in the room if the sun is allowed to stream through the glass unabated.

We recommend screen fabric roller blinds for a work environment. This fabric allows sunlight to pass through the weave of the blind but it diffuses the beams so as to not create glare or hot spots. Check out our Teramo roller blinds here.

Office Chair

Considering you’ll be spending many hours sitting in it, you really need to take your time when choosing your office chair. If you come to a choice of style or ergonomics, choose ergonomics every time. That’s not to say you can’t find stylish office chairs, but it is important you have the correct adjustments available and the ability to fully support your back and posture.

Look for arm, lumber and back support adjustments as well as the usual up/down height adjustment too, and always choose comfort over style in this respect.

Inspirational Art

You don’t have to go overboard with this one, but you need to feel inspired by your settings, especially when you consider how long you will be spending in the room. Go for something that adds a bit of colour to the room, lifts your spirits and helps to keep your mind firing on all cylinders! Having something on the walls also helps to reduce how much sound reverberates in the room, acting like a subtle muffler which is particularly handy if you’re making phone calls or speaking to people via video conferencing.
