Things To Look Out For When Choosing A Blind For A Child's Room

Listen to that… silence. Sweet, sweet silence, the sound of a baby falling asleep in a dark room, peace descending on the home.

A sleeping baby is a precious moment you don’t want to disturb, and a window blind is a great way to keep out any beams of sunlight that could awaken them.

The three things parents tell us they look for in a window blind for a nursery or areas children spend time in are:

Style - Safety - Silence

Stylish Nursery Blinds

Stylish kids nurseryThe blind has to look good in the room. Granted, the kid won’t appreciate your efforts for another twenty years and won’t fathom the concept of complimentary and contrasting colours, but hey, you live in the house too, you know!

Look for a blind that suits the room but doesn’t draw too much attention to itself. We recommend a plain blind, free of eye-catching motifs that could draw the child towards it to play. All our blinds at DotcomBlinds are child safe, but it’s not best to encourage that behaviour as you’re never sure how safe everyone else’s blinds are.

Fabric wise, you want a blind that is built to last. Children have a knack for getting dirty, and no doubt some of it will end up on your blinds (not to mention the sofa, carpet, wallpaper, cat and so on…) so go for an easy to clean fabric, preferably a PVC based material. It is tough, easy to wipe down and many are anti-bacterial, which means it kills off colds and bugs that land on it before it has a chance to spread.

A final comment on this: choose blackout fabric. Now, if you go for the aforementioned PVC based fabric you’ll probably find it is blackout anyway, but if you’re trying to get children to fall asleep early on a summer’s evening, casting the room into darkness is no bad idea.

Safe Nursery Blinds

Safety is paramount when it comes to children and blinds. All of our blinds are child safe as standard, coming with a variety of features that must be fitted at the time of installation to make the blind safe. However, we also offer a Child Safe Plus feature that means the blind has nothing for a child to get entangled or caught up in. You can read more about the individual parts of a blind that plays its part in child safety here, but here’s a quick crash course in Child Safe Plus:

If a child should get caught in the chain of a roller blind, the chain should breakaway, as is necessary to make it child safe. However, Child Safe Plus blinds have no chain at all. For as little as £15 you can upgrade to a Child Safe Plus mechanism. This means the blind uses crank mechanisms, springs or remote-control motors as a means to raise and lower the blind. Consider this when you come to choose your blind, particularly if the window is quite low or the child has access to it.

Silent Window Blinds

A sleeping baby shouldn't be woken by a window blind being adjustedYou know how it is: the baby has just gone off to sleep and you’re exiting the room like a ninja on eggshells, only to tread on a squeaky toy, trip over and fall face first into a toy drum kit, waking up the baby and undoing the past hour’s hard graft.

Sometimes you’ll need to adjust the blind whilst your child sleeps, and we all know how ruthlessly squeaky those cheap readymade blinds can be when you use them. That’s down to a lot of cardboard and plastic rubbing against each other; poor quality components making a cheap and easy blind but also a cacophony of noise. Avoid, avoid, avoid.

You’ll find DotcomBlinds only use the best materials and have a huge amount of technology in our blinds. This level of workmanship means that our blinds will be quieter and of better quality than your readymade-shop-bought blinds you can get for a tenner in the DIY shop. As Abraham Lincoln once said: “Buy cheap, buy twice, so only buy your blinds from DotcomBlinds.’*
