Be Prepared: Tools You Need For Blind Fitting

There are two types of people in this world. The prepared and the under prepared. Which one are you?

The prepared person knows their blind is due to be delivered imminently and wishes to gather their tools to prepare for the installation. They like to know exactly what they’re going to need, perhaps even taking time out of the evening before to clean and oil the tools in preparation. With military precision you conquer your DIY task flawlessly, with the tools laid within arm’s reach, arranged neatly with the optimum 5cm gap between each tool.

Opposite to this are the underprepared who never intend to wing it, but inevitably do. You know the sort of DIY-er, the one who uses half-filled pint glasses balanced on shelves to act as a spirit level because they lost it in the shed once upon a time. Or perhaps the person who doesn’t own a hammer so opts for a weighty book to batter the nail in instead. I won’t tell you which one I am but I hear the spine of the Encyclopaedia Britannica is most effective at accomplishing the task.

Whether you are prepared or underprepared but still expecting a roller, vertical or venetian blind to be delivered soon, then this is the blog post for you. Read on to find out what tools you’ll need to install a blind.

Your blind – roller, vertical or venetian – will come with brackets but no fixing kit. So we supply the brackets, but you'll have to buy your own screws and wall plugs – two for each bracket and one for the child safety device if the blind needs it. The following are handy tools you’ll most likely have around the house and our blinds don’t require any specific machinery for you to install them (but feel free to hire a cherry-picker if your window is particularly tall).

Tools you need to install a blind:

A pencil

 A tape measure

 A drill

A spirit level

 A screwdriver

Your tape measure will come in handy, especially in the measuring stages. This is how you’ll find the width and drop of the blind, but also to give you the distance away from the window that the blind will need to be installed if you have handles that will get in the way.

When you come to install the blind, you’ll be able to use the tape measure to check that your pencil marks for the holes are spaced evenly from the window at each end.

The drill will allow you to create holes which are indicated by pencil markings. These holes will allow you to put the wall plug in and then screw the blind in to it.

If you’re drilling into wood, you’ll need a thin wood drill bit which will create something called a pilot hole which helps to guide the screw in. If you’re going into masonry, you’ll need a bigger drill bit (make sure the drill bit is the same size as the wall plug). Put like that, installing blinds is a doddle!
