DotcomBlinds is excited to offer two types of electric blinds – a battery operated remote control blind and a mains operated remote control blind. Battery-operated electric blinds are the easiest way to operate a roller blind. At the touch of a button you can raise, lower and even pre-programme stop places to hold the blind at different heights down the window.
The possibilities with a motorised electric blind are virtually endless. The motor can battery operated, meaning it can be installed anywhere without the need to hardwire it, just so long as you can get the charging lead to reach it every 4-6 months or so. For those locations where a charging lead just would not be practical, we offer a solar panel option which will trickle charge the battery. The cable length for both types of charger is approximately 2m in length.
Alternatively, the blind can be mains electrically operated, either wired directly into the mains or plugged into an outlet (3-pin plug not included), allowing you to span wider widths and easy use for higher installations.
How Electric Blinds Work
The motor is tucked inside the barrel of the blind, meaning it is a clean and simple installation with no excess parts to consider. The motorised blinds require a remote control to operate them (sold separately), and it is possible to use a single remote to control up to 6 blinds simultaneously or individually.
The remote (purchased separately) will connect to the motor inside the blind once you’ve followed the programming instructions. After which, the motor will know where the top of the blind is and where the bottom is, allowing you to simply hit the button and it will work without over-spooling itself.
Our electric motorised blinds also have the ability to set stop points down the window which means if you press the button once it will go to the first stop point, which maybe a quarter of the way down the window, for example. Press the button again and it can go to the next stop point, which could be halfway down the window. This level of programming is useful for limiting direct sunlight throughout the day but still allowing some daylight in.
How To Charge Battery Electric Blinds
To keep your blind running smoothly, you'll need to top it up with power from time to time, no different to your mobile phone, but thankfully nowhere near as often! In fact, on a full charge you can expect your blind to work seamlessly for up to 6 months on standard usage. On each battery operated roller blind product page you’ll see that we offer a choice
Mains Charger Only Option
Each order that includes a DotcomBlinds Battery Electric Blind will come with a mains charger (one supplied per order regardless of the number of blinds ordered). Simply plug into a mains power socket and connect it to the blind. The blind can remain in place while being charged so there’s no need to remove it.
A full charge of the battery will take around 4 hours and based on standard usage of twice a day you should expect up to 6 months of usage.
Solar Panel Charger + Mains Charger Option
If you don’t want to worry about needing to charge your battery, you could opt for the addition of a Solar Panel Charger. This plugs into the charging port of your blind and can either be mounted to the recess with the solar panel facing the window.
This will then provide a “trickle charge”, permanently keeping your battery topped up and ready to go!
If you aren’t getting enough power, either through insufficient sunlight coming through the window or heavy usage, you can always top the battery up with the mains charger supplied, although for most situations you shouldn’t need to do this.
Estimated battery usage will depend on the number of times the blind is used within 1 day as well as other factors such a size and weight of the fabric, but within our tests, up to 6 months per full charge is a good indication.
Features of a Battery-Operated Electric Blind
Electric blinds are ideal for anyone looking for convenience and ease off use. For those who may have mobility issues, or hard to reach windows, or perhaps for someone which windows that are very high, this blind can provide shaded-bliss at the touch of a button.
Due to the fact that this blind is controlled by a remote control, there are no dangling chains that provide a child safety risk. With no chains or cords used to operate the blind, a remote controlled blind is inherently child safe by design.
We are able to make a selection of our electric roller blinds to extra wide widths. These are sizes far superior than those offered by other companies, and this is because we automatically upgrade the thickness of the barrel to accommodate for the added weight of the fabric as the square metreage increases. As a result, we can offer electric blinds to the maximum width of 3.4 metres with a maximum drop of 4.2 metres.
A large selection of our electric blinds are available for Next Working Day Delivery, meaning that we are able to get your blind delivered to you the very next working day if you select the shipping method and place your order before 11am.
Why Choose XL Mains Electric Blinds?
Mains electric roller blinds are ideal for covering wider window widths and are supplied with a 2m cable that runs from the blind and should be installed to the mains supply by a fully qualified electrician.
Heavy duty mains electric roller blinds are capable of going to widths and drops standard electric roller blinds can’t reach. To account for these larger sizes the barrel and brackets are slightly larger and uses mains electricity to operate, making it ideal for high installations where it isn’t always easy to access the blind to charge a battery. The maximum width our XL mains electric blinds can reach is a width of 4700mm (4.7m) with a drop of 2150mm (2.15m). Naturally, as the width of the blind is reduced we’re able to increase the drop, so we can manufacture this blind to a drop of 5750mm (5.7m) if the width is 1700mm (1.7m) or less.
